The sleeping fire lotus is a horticultural variety among water lilies and other aquatic flowers, named for its brilliant flame-like flower color and the way its blooms open by day and close by night like a water lily. It grows year-round in still water, with round leaves floating on the surface and flowers rising above the water to bloom. The flowers are mostly purple or purplish red, often with golden-yellow tones at the center, standing out strikingly against the green leaves and clear water, and they have high ornamental value.

The sleeping fire lotus prefers a sunny, warm environment and is suitable for planting in quiet ponds, water vats or large containers. When cultivating it, use pond mud rich in humus as the bottom soil, and the water level should not be too deep, just enough for the leaves to spread out naturally and float on the surface. During the growing season, keep the light adequate and the water clean, and only then will the plant readily form buds and bloom.

In daily care, pay attention to regularly topping up and changing the water, and promptly remove dead leaves and spent flowers to reduce mosquito breeding and the occurrence of disease. The sleeping fire lotus is not cold-hardy; after the temperature drops noticeably, the pot should be moved indoors or protected with insulation to keep the underwater rhizomes from freezing damage, so that they can sprout smoothly the following year and continue to bloom.

The sleeping fire lotus is mainly used for courtyard water features, balcony water vats and similar landscape arrangements, and can also be planted together with lotus or other water lily varieties to create a richly layered water surface effect. If it only grows leaves without blooming, this is mostly related to insufficient light, water that is too deep, or a lack of nutrients, and the care conditions can be adjusted accordingly. As for the claims circulating online that its flowering period is extremely short and its price is very high, these are mostly hype; in actual cultivation, simply manage it according to the conventional methods for water lilies and similar flowers.
