Flowers of December include wintersweet and camellia, so there are flowers to enjoy even in the depths of cold winter
December is one of the periods with lower temperatures in the year, and most regions enter deep winter, but the business of flowers does not stop there. Indoors and in open-ground environments in the south, there is still a group of flowers blooming on schedule. The so-called flowers of December generally refer to flowers that enter their flowering period around December, or that are suitable for viewing and care in this month.
Common plants that bloom in December include wintersweet, camellia, poinsettia, Christmas cactus, cyclamen, kalanchoe and narcissus. Among them, wintersweet has relatively strong cold tolerance and can overwinter in the open ground and bloom normally in many regions; poinsettia, Christmas cactus, cyclamen and others are mostly grown indoors as potted ornamentals, and their flowering period happens to cover the holiday season around New Year's Day.
When caring for these flowers in winter, the key points are keeping them warm and controlling water. Most plants that bloom in winter need plenty of light and should be placed on a south-facing windowsill or balcony as much as possible. The watering frequency should be noticeably reduced compared with the peak growing season, and keeping the potting soil on the dry side is safer, while applying little or no strong fertilizer to avoid putting too much burden on the roots. When a cold wave arrives, cold-sensitive species should be moved indoors promptly.
Whether to add to the festive atmosphere or to add color to the bleak winter days, the flowers of December have unique ornamental value. Choose a few suitable winter flowers to grow at home, manage their flowering period well, and you can still harvest plenty of vitality in the cold season.
