Flowers that bloom in autumn generally refer to ornamental plants whose natural flowering period is concentrated in the autumn, usually lasting from around September to November. During this season, temperatures gradually drop and daylight hours shorten. Many autumn flowers are short-day plants, and the cool climate is actually favorable for them to form buds and bloom smoothly.

There are quite a few representative varieties among common autumn-blooming flowers. The chrysanthemum is a typical representative of autumn flowers, with extremely rich flower forms and colors; osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) blooms during the golden autumn season, with a rich fragrance, and is suitable for courtyard planting in the ground or for potted display. In addition, cotton rose (Hibiscus mutabilis), red spider lily (Lycoris radiata), dahlia, scarlet sage, and begonia also mostly enter their full flowering period in autumn. A reasonable combination can keep a rich layering of colors in the autumn courtyard.

In terms of care, most autumn flowers like ample light. If light is insufficient during the flower bud differentiation stage, it can easily affect the quantity and quality of blooming. Watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting dry out between waterings, gradually reducing the amount of water as temperatures fall, to avoid long-term water accumulation in the pot causing root rot. Before flowering, a moderate supplement of fertilizer with a higher phosphorus and potassium content can help bud development, but the fertilizer concentration should not be too high, so as not to burn the roots.

Autumn is also a suitable period for pruning and repotting. For some plants that decline after blooming in summer, you can take advantage of the cool temperatures to cut off spent flowers and dead branches and tidy up the plant shape, laying a good foundation for next year's growth. If you want to create a balcony or courtyard with scenery in all four seasons, choose several autumn flowers with complementary flowering periods and plant them together, and the ornamental period will be longer.
