What Flowers Bloom in Autumn: An Introduction to Common Varieties and Care Essentials
Autumn flowers generally refer to plants that bloom in concentrated fashion in autumn and have high ornamental value. At this time temperatures gradually drop and the difference between day and night temperatures widens, and many flowers happen to enter their peak bloom period, with vivid colors and relatively long flowering periods, making it a good season for courtyard landscaping and home flower growing.
Common autumn flower varieties are very rich. The chrysanthemum is one of the most representative autumn flowers, with numerous varieties and diverse flower shapes; osmanthus has a rich fragrance in autumn days and is often planted in courtyards or along roadsides; the cotton rose (Hibiscus mutabilis) has large, eye-catching flowers, and its flower color even changes over the course of a day. In addition, dahlias, begonias, scarlet sage, cockscomb, and Lycoris radiata are also common and ornamental-worthy flowers in autumn.
In terms of care, adjustments should be made promptly as temperatures change. Autumn light is soft, and most flowering plants can be given more sun, which helps flower bud differentiation and color development; watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting the soil dry between waterings, avoiding long-term dampness in the pot that leads to root rot. When temperatures drop noticeably, cold-sensitive varieties should be moved indoors in advance or given protective measures. Removing spent flowers promptly after blooming and appropriately supplementing with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can help plants recover nutrients and also favor blooming again the following year.
Besides their ornamental value, quite a few autumn flowers also have practical functions. Osmanthus can be used to add fragrance to foods and tea, and the chrysanthemum in traditional culture symbolizes nobility and is often associated with the custom of viewing flowers on the Double Ninth Festival. If varieties with different flowering periods and flower colors are reasonably combined, the courtyard and balcony can have scenery to enjoy throughout the entire autumn.
