Gastrochilus is the collective name for plants in the genus Gastrochilus of the orchid family, belonging to the perennial epiphytic herbs. It usually attaches itself to tree trunks or rocks in forests to grow, and gets its name from the basin-shaped or spur-shaped structure at the base of the lip. The plants are mostly not tall, with fleshy or leathery leaves often arranged in two rows, appearing compact and elegant overall.

There are quite a few species under the genus Gastrochilus, commonly seen ones include Gastrochilus japonicus, Gastrochilus distichus, and Gastrochilus formosanus. Although its flowers are not exactly large, their form is distinctive, and the basin-shaped structure of the lip is very unique, with flower colors mostly yellow-green and often bearing brown markings, appearing fresh and elegant when viewed.

In terms of distribution, Gastrochilus mainly grows in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, and wild resources also exist in Yunnan, Tibet, Hainan, Taiwan, China and other places in our country. It likes a warm and humid environment with sufficient scattered light, and in its native state it relies on its roots attaching to the substrate to absorb water and nutrients, so it is not suitable to be planted directly in ordinary garden soil.

When caring for Gastrochilus at home, bark chunks, sphagnum moss, or tree fern fibers can be used as substrate to ensure good root aeration. Place it in bright scattered light daily, avoid harsh sun exposure, water by the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings, and when the air is dry you can spray around it to increase humidity. During the growing season, some dilute orchid-specific fertilizer can be applied, reduce moving it around before and after the flowering period, and in winter pay attention to keeping it warm and controlling watering.

Because of its small plant size and peculiar flower shape, Gastrochilus is suitable as an epiphytic potted plant or for mounting on boards for viewing, used to decorate balconies and indoor corners. Keeping the environment ventilated during care can reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases, and the plant will also grow more robustly.
