Dwarf flowering plum (Prunus glandulosa) is a deciduous small shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae), genus Prunus. It is widely distributed in China and is a common spring-flowering ornamental plant. Its form is low and compact, with fine, dense branches and narrow, lance-shaped leaves. It blooms every spring, with flowers borne singly or in pairs, commonly white and pink, in both single and double forms; when in full bloom the branches are covered in flowers and very eye-catching. After flowering it produces small, nearly spherical drupes that turn red when ripe, though in cultivation it is still grown mainly for its flowers.

In terms of varieties, dwarf flowering plum includes types such as the white-flowered dwarf flowering plum, the pink-flowered dwarf flowering plum and the double-flowered dwarf flowering plum, among which the double-flowered varieties have layered petals like small cherry blossoms and are especially ornamental. It resembles the related Chinese bush cherry (Prunus japonica) in appearance and is easily confused with it; the two can be told apart by pedicel length, leaf shape and fruit characteristics. When buying, simply confirm the flower color and petal type, then match them to your own garden style.

For care, dwarf flowering plum likes a sunny environment and is fairly cold-tolerant and drought-tolerant, but it is afraid of waterlogging; it is not demanding about soil, though it grows better in loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam. Water routinely by the "dry-wet" principle, and drain promptly in the rainy season to prevent root rot. After flowering, remove spent flowers, dead branches and overly dense branches, which keeps the plant shape attractive and also favors flowering the following year. Propagation is commonly by division, cuttings or grafting, none of which is difficult.

In use, dwarf flowering plum blooms profusely in spring and is suitable for group planting as accents in courtyards, along roadsides and at lawn edges, and can also be grown in pots for display. As long as it gets plenty of light, drains well and has good ventilation, pest and disease problems can be reduced, and you can enjoy a tree full of blossoms year after year.
