How to care for lilies after the flowering period? A detailed guide to post-bloom care

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
After flowering, first shape and prune the lily, preferably in the morning or evening; then reduce watering to prevent root rot; next, pause fertilizing - do not fertilize after flowering; finally, keep it warm in winter, with the ideal temperature between 16 and 24, and never below 5 degrees.

1. Shaping and pruning

After the plant flowers, you can prune it appropriately, but note that pruning must not be done at noon - morning or evening is best, so that its normal growth is not affected. When pruning, cut off the spent flowers, dead branches and excess side branches to prevent them from consuming large amounts of nutrients. After pruning, by the following year it will produce more and more beautiful flowers.

2. Reduce watering

Lilies become very fragile after flowering, so after pruning you must not water them immediately - be sure to reduce the amount of water, because after blooming they gradually enter a dormant state and no longer absorb water at that point. If too much water accumulates in the pot, the roots will rot, which will restrict its growth and, in severe cases, even kill it. So you must control the water amount well.

3. Fertilizing and top-dressing

After flowering, you must fertilize and top-dress correctly. During the flowering period, you can apply a compound fertilizer once, preferably once a week, with an appropriate amount each time. After flowering, you can stop fertilizing; this will let it produce more beautiful flowers and also extend the flowering period.

4. Winter warmth

After flowering, the temperature gradually drops and winter slowly arrives. The temperature it can tolerate is 16 to 24 degrees, and it must never be lower than 5 degrees, otherwise growth will be affected. So in winter be sure to keep it warm; you can move it indoors and keep the temperature above 10 degrees, which will let it get through winter safely and bloom normally the following year.
