Growing Radermachera sinica This Way Gives Deep Green Leaves, a Handsome Shape and Vigorous Growth
Radermachera sinica (commonly known as the China doll or serpent tree) is an evergreen tree in the Bignoniaceae family, genus Radermachera, and is often simply called "Lübao" in the flower market. It is closely related to the happiness tree (Radermachera hainanensis) and is mostly grown as an indoor foliage potted plant. Its leaves are large bipinnate compound leaves, with leathery, glossy leaflets and deep green color, and the plant has an upright, spreading shape that looks full of life placed in a living room, office or similar space.
To care for Radermachera sinica, give it a warm, humid environment. Usually the most suitable spot is one with bright, indirect light. In summer, take care to avoid strong direct sun, and in winter protect it from the cold and keep it warm, avoiding direct cold drafts. Water according to the principle of letting the soil dry out between waterings; if the potting soil stays too wet for a long time, root rot is likely. When the air is dry, spray water on the leaves and around the plant to maintain humidity, and in the peak growing season simply add a little diluted fertilizer.
In daily care, Radermachera sinica is fairly prone to yellowing leaves and leaf drop, which are mostly related to overwatering, insufficient light, low temperatures or poor ventilation. Once a problem is noticed, promptly adjust the plant's position, control watering, remove withered yellow leaves, and keep the potting soil loose and airy; the plant will generally recover slowly.
Radermachera sinica is commonly propagated by cuttings. Select robust growing branches, insert them into a loose, airy medium, maintain suitable temperature and humidity, and after they take root and survive, transplant them into pots. Radermachera sinica has attractive leaves, is easy to grow and tolerates shade; it can both decorate the home environment and, to a certain extent, improve indoor air, making it a very popular foliage plant.
