How to Grow and Care for Golden Barrel Cactus: Even Beginners Can Do It Well
The golden barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) is a succulent in the cactus family, native to the arid desert regions of Mexico. Its round, emerald-green body is densely covered with golden-yellow stiff spines, and from a distance it looks like a green sphere edged in gold, making it highly ornamental. The golden barrel cactus is long-lived; with proper care it can stay with its owner for many years, and it is a common cactus-type potted plant for home windowsills and office desks.
In horticulture there are quite a few varieties of the golden barrel cactus, such as the white-spined golden barrel, the fierce-spined golden barrel and the variegated golden barrel, each with distinctive spine color and body form. Mature plants produce small yellow flowers at the top of the body in summer, though flowering is not common in home cultivation and requires years of careful tending. The golden barrel cactus grows slowly, and it often takes a long time for a small seedling to become a large ball, which is also why many enthusiasts enjoy collecting them gradually.
The key to growing a golden barrel cactus lies in light and watering. It likes a sunny environment; apart from light shading at midday in high summer, it should get plenty of sun in the other seasons. With prolonged lack of light the body becomes thin and pointed, and its ornamental value drops noticeably. Water sparingly rather than generously: wait until the potting soil is completely dry, then water thoroughly, and control water strictly in winter when temperatures are low. A sandy soil with good drainage and aeration is best; you can mix garden soil with coarse sand or granular media to improve aeration.
When beginners run into problems with a golden barrel cactus, it is mostly over-frequent watering that causes root rot. If you notice the body becoming soft and yellow, take it out of the pot promptly and check the roots. In winter, move it indoors to a warm, sunny spot to avoid frost damage. Pay attention to ventilation at ordinary times and move the pot as little as possible so you do not get pricked by the stiff spines. Do these things well, and your golden barrel cactus will grow plump and round with bright golden spines.
