The care method for ginger lily is not difficult; its fragrance is elegant and its flowers resemble butterflies
Ginger lily is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Hedychium in the ginger family. Because its pure white flowers resemble butterflies with spread wings, it is also often called butterfly ginger, wild ginger lily or white ginger lily. Its spike inflorescence is terminal, and the flowers open in sequence from bottom to top. The flowering period is mostly concentrated in summer and autumn. When in full bloom, it gives off an elegant fragrance, and it is a common ornamental flower in southern courtyards and beside water.
Ginger lily prefers a warm and humid climate and has poor cold tolerance. In winter, when temperatures are low, its aboveground parts wither, and it overwinters relying on the underground rhizome, then sprouts again the following spring. When caring for it, choose loose, fertile soil with good drainage, place it in a position with half-day sun or bright indirect light, keep the soil moist during the growing period and supplement nutrients appropriately, and the plant will grow more luxuriantly.
Propagation is mainly by division. In spring, cut the underground rhizome into small sections with buds and plant them separately; the survival rate is high and growth resumes quickly. Some flower growers report that ginger lily only grows leaves and does not bloom, which is mostly related to insufficient light, fertilizer that is too high in nitrogen, or overly crowded rhizomes. Appropriately increasing light, adjusting nutrients and dividing the rhizomes regularly often improves the situation.
It should be noted that although ginger lily belongs to the same family as ginger, it is not the ginger commonly eaten in daily life. Their fragrance and uses are clearly different, so do not confuse them when buying or planting.
The most outstanding value of ginger lily lies in its ornamental appeal and fragrance. The white flowers are elegant and the scent is pleasant. Cut a few stems and put them in a vase, and the whole room is filled with a light fresh fragrance. The flowers can also be used to extract natural essence. In Cuba, ginger lily is even chosen as the national flower, which shows how much people love it.
