An Introduction to the Characteristics and Cultivation Methods of Cymbidium kanran
Cymbidium kanran is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Cymbidium in the orchid family (Orchidaceae), and an important member of the traditional Chinese orchids; it gets its name because it usually blooms in late autumn and early winter. It is mainly distributed in the mountainous areas of southern China, often growing on well-drained slopes under forest canopy or beside streams. Cymbidium kanran has a delicate plant form, with slender, upright leaves; the flower scape rises above the leaves, and when in bloom its graceful bearing makes it highly ornamental.
The petals of Cymbidium kanran are relatively narrow and long, and the flower colors are rich, commonly including greenish-green, yellow-green, purplish-red and white; in horticulture it is often classified by flower color into types such as green Cymbidium kanran, purple Cymbidium kanran and red Cymbidium kanran. Most Cymbidium kanran have a delicate fragrance, with a light, lasting scent, which is one of the reasons it is deeply loved by orchid growers.
For cultivating Cymbidium kanran, it is best to choose a loose, breathable, well-drained growing medium, such as leaf mold combined with bark, coconut husk and other materials. It likes a semi-shaded environment and fears intense direct sunlight, so it can be appropriately shaded during the growing season, while in winter it can be given fairly ample scattered light. Watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings, avoiding water accumulation in the pot that causes root rot; during the peak growing period, apply dilute fertilizer frequently, and at the same time keep the environment well ventilated.
The common problems of Cymbidium kanran are mostly root rot and leaf diseases, usually related to overwatering and poor ventilation; in daily care, attention should be paid to controlling water and strengthening air circulation. It is suitable for pot cultivation placed in courtyards, on balconies or in bright indoor spots; when it blooms, its delicate fragrance fills the room, making it a variety well worth choosing among orchids for winter viewing.
