Succulents is the collective name for plants with thick, fleshy leaves, stems or roots. Most of these plants originate from arid or semi-arid regions, and their thickened tissues can store large amounts of water, helping them survive long periods of drought. Common succulents cover many families and genera, including Crassulaceae, Aizoaceae and Cactaceae; varieties such as Haworthia cooperi, Sedum rubrotinctum, Cotyledon tomentosa and Sempervivum tectorum are all much loved by plant enthusiasts.

As for care, succulents like a sunny, well-ventilated environment, and should not be watered too often; usually it is enough to water thoroughly once the potting soil has completely dried out, since prolonged waterlogging easily causes root rot. During the high temperatures of summer and the low temperatures of winter, many varieties enter dormancy or semi-dormancy; at this time watering should be reduced, and appropriate shading or insulation provided to help the plants safely get through summer and winter.

Succulents are easy to propagate: leaf cuttings, stem cuttings and division all take root fairly readily. A single leaf placed on slightly moist soil has a chance of rooting and sprouting, which is one of the reasons they are so popular. Their compact and cute form makes them suitable for placing on a windowsill, balcony or office desk, where they can both decorate a space and add to the pleasure of tending plants.

The problems beginners most often encounter are leggy growth and root rot. Insufficient light easily leads to leggy stems and leaves and a loose, open shape, so light exposure should be increased gradually; if the leaves become soft and wrinkled, it may be related to a lack of water or damaged roots, so the potting soil and root condition should be checked first, and the watering frequency adjusted accordingly.
