Characteristics and Care Methods of the Daxuesu Cymbidium (Lianban Orchid)
Daxuesu is a traditional famous variety of the Lianban orchid (Cymbidium), belonging to the genus Cymbidium in the family Orchidaceae, and is mainly produced in the Yunnan area. Its flowers are pure white and plain, with almost no speckles of other colors, which is how it got the name Daxuesu, and it has long been a plain-hearted orchid variety much loved by orchid enthusiasts.
The leaves of Daxuesu are slender and soft, curving and drooping naturally, with an elegant, flowing posture. After the flower scape emerges, it produces several flowers, with petals that are white with a hint of green, and a pure white lip; the overall look is refined and generous. The flowering period is mostly between winter and early spring, often blooming around the Spring Festival, and when in bloom the fragrance is light and pleasant, with high ornamental value.
For care, Daxuesu likes a warm, cool, and well-ventilated environment, and dislikes harsh sun exposure; it can usually be placed in a spot with diffused light. The growing medium should be loose, breathable, and well-draining, and can be mixed from bark, volcanic stone, and the like. Water according to the principle of letting it dry before watering again, keeping the medium slightly moist but not waterlogged, and when the air is dry, mist appropriately to increase humidity.
During the growing season, apply light fertilizer sparingly, and the concentration should not be too high, so as not to damage the roots. In summer, when temperatures are high, strengthen shading and ventilation, and in winter, take care to protect against the cold and keep it warm. Because Daxuesu is quite well known, the market inevitably has cases of inferior goods being passed off as superior ones; when buying, it is advisable to carefully identify the leaf and flower color characteristics and purchase through reliable channels.
