Syzygium buxifolium is an evergreen shrub or small tree of the genus Syzygium in the family Myrtaceae, and is fairly common in the mountains and along streams of southern China. It is also known as yulinmu, niujinzi and by other names. Its branches are fine and dense, its leaves small and leathery, deep green and glossy, and its form compact. It sprouts readily and tolerates pruning well, making it a common material for bonsai and hedges.

Each year, at the turn of spring and summer, Syzygium buxifolium produces fine white flowers in dense clusters that fill the branches, with a light fragrance. After flowering it sets small spherical fruits that turn from green to red and then to purplish black when ripe; they are sweet-sour and edible, and the fruiting period gives a good display of fruit. Old specimens have aged-looking bark and sturdy, forceful branches, and after wiring and pruning they are even more ornamental, so they are widely used in Lingnan-style bonsai.

For care, Syzygium buxifolium likes a warm, humid environment with plenty of sunlight. It tolerates light shade but not severe cold, so in northern regions it should be moved indoors to overwinter. It is not demanding about soil, but a loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic sandy soil is best. Keep the potting soil moist but not waterlogged in daily care, apply light fertilizer frequently during the peak growing season, and prune and pinch back regularly to maintain a compact, attractive tree shape.

When growing Syzygium buxifolium, pay attention to ventilation; a stuffy, hot and humid environment easily invites scale insects and sooty mold, so affected branches and leaves should be cut off promptly and pesticide applied for control. Leaf drop caused by overwatering is also a common problem. If the leaf color darkens and leaves fall, first check whether the potting soil is waterlogged, then switch to watering by the wet-dry cycle method, and the plant can generally recover gradually.
