Thyme is a perennial aromatic plant of the genus Thymus in the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is mostly subshrubby and often grows in patches on sunny slopes, meadows or among rock crevices. The plant is low-growing with fine, dense stems and small oval or lanceolate leaves that range from grayish green to dark green; a gentle rub releases a fresh, pungent aroma.

As seen in the pictures, the most recognizable feature of thyme is its small flowers. The flowers usually bloom in spring and summer in colors such as pale purple, pink and white. The tiny flowers gather in clusters at the tips of the branches, and at full bloom they look from a distance like a thin carpet of flowers, which is why thyme is often used as a ground cover or as edging material for courtyards.

There are quite a few species in the genus Thymus. Besides the wild thyme commonly seen in the wild, varieties such as common thyme, lemon thyme and creeping thyme can also be found in gardens and kitchens. Different varieties differ slightly in plant form, leaf color and fragrance; some creep along the ground while others grow upright in clumps, each with its own emphasis on ornamental or practical value.

For care, thyme likes a sunny, well-ventilated environment. It is drought-tolerant and afraid of waterlogging, so watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry out between waterings. A loose, well-drained sandy soil is best. It is fairly tolerant of cold, but during hot, humid rainy seasons care should be taken to prevent water accumulation, otherwise the roots are prone to problems.

Besides its ornamental value, thyme is also a common herb plant. Its branches and leaves can be used as a seasoning to enhance the flavor of dishes, and can also be used to make tea or extract aromatic oil, making it a household potted plant choice that combines beauty and practicality.
