What to do when your pothos is so bare only the stems are left? Learn this one trick to bring it back from the dead and propagate 10 more pots
Whether you cut it or it falls off, why is your pothos bare?
Pothos is a very easy-to-grow green plant. It is shade-tolerant, can absorb formaldehyde when placed in the bedroom, and looking at it can occasionally help relax your eyes. But although it grows longer and longer, it also becomes more and more bare - what can be done?
1. Insufficient nutrients in the potting soil. For the green plants we keep at home, we rarely take the trouble to specially buy fertilizer to feed them, nor do we repot them. With no fertilizing and no soil change for a long time, it has no strength to grow good leaves.
2. Cold damage from low temperatures. Pothos is not cold-tolerant. If it stays for too long in temperatures below 10 degrees, it will suffer cold damage, become limp and droopy, and lose its vitality. Did you let it get cold in winter?
Here is a pothos rebirth method for you, please keep it well
If your pothos has already become as bare as above, wanting it to grow back into a lush appearance is not very realistic. We can absolutely use these stems and leaves to plant hope anew!
Steps:
1. Cut off your bare pothos stems and cut them into small sections of 5~7cm.
2. Use leaf mold and coconut coir to make the potting soil, at a ratio of about 1:1. The leaf mold must be sun-disinfected before use. The coconut coir mainly serves to retain water and promote rooting in the pothos.
3. Place the cut pothos stems in the pot with the nodes facing up. After arranging them, water the pot thoroughly.
4. Wrap the pot with a plastic bag or cling film, poke two small holes in the surface with a needle for ventilation, and place it in a warm place without direct sunlight, keeping the internal environment at about 15~25 degrees, like a small greenhouse, which can speed up rooting.
5. If all goes well, within 1 month the pothos stems will grow new leaves, and then you can wait for it to fill the pot again!
If your pothos still has some healthy leaves, you can do this:
1. Cut off the stronger pothos leaves with aerial roots or pothos stems with nodes.
2. Place them in a pot (you can make full use of idle containers at home).
3. First put some clay pebbles or broken pottery pieces at the bottom of the pot, then hold the pothos leaves upright and continue adding clay pebbles until the pothos stands steady.
4. Add water to the pot until it is about two-thirds full. If there are new buds on the pothos stems, be careful not to submerge the new buds. This step is to let the pothos root.
5. In about a month it will have rooted successfully. Wait until the pothos leaves have grown to 3~5 leaves, then move it into potting soil to grow. It will not be long before it is a lush green pot again!
If you think preparing clay pebbles is too troublesome, you can also directly put the cut leaves into potting soil to grow.
It should be noted that while waiting for the pothos to root and sprout, you must keep the soil moist and water it in time.
For pothos to fill the pot in no time, these points are also indispensable
1. Water it correctly. Pothos likes a moist growing environment. During the growing season, except in winter, the soil should be kept moist in all seasons, but be careful not to let water accumulate, otherwise the roots rot easily. In spring, generally water once every 3~5 days, and be sure to water thoroughly.
If it has been short of water for a long time, find a container larger than the pot, fill it with water, then put the pot in it and let the water seep from the bottom of the pot into the soil. After the soil has fully absorbed the water, the pothos can recover its vitality.
2. Fertilize correctly. Except in winter, pothos grows relatively fast in the other three seasons. During this period, the soil fertility must keep up, mainly with nitrogen fertilizer, applying thin fertilizer frequently. For example, we can mix fermented rice water with clean water at 1:20 and apply it once a week.
