The Agricultural Research Institute successfully bred Taiwan, China's first new hybrid citrus variety. The "Tainung No. 1 Jinxiang" citrus has variety characteristics including soft flesh that is easier to juice than ordinary sweet oranges, high sugar and acid content, strong aroma, deep orange juice color, and a high juice rate. It can be developed into a fresh-squeezed juice or fresh-eating variety. The launch of this emerging variety will provide consumers with a diverse new choice.
Taiwan, China's citrus cultivation area currently stands at 33,000 hectares. In recent years, the cultivation areas of the main varieties, including Ponkan, Tankan, Liucheng, and Wendan, have gradually shrunk, while the area of hybrid citrus has gradually increased from 1,398 hectares in 1990 to 4,418 hectares in 2006. Hybrid citrus mainly consists of emerging varieties such as Murcott, Minneola tangelo, Fremont, lime, and navel orange, showing that emerging varieties are more easily welcomed by the market.
The Chiayi Branch of the Agricultural Research Institute has preserved 165 citrus varieties and lines, providing a good foundation for hybrid breeding. Using the province's seedless Tankan and Pineapple sweet orange, one of the main sweet orange varieties of Florida in the United States, a cross was made. Starting in the 74th year of the Republic of China, Pineapple sweet orange pollen was used to pollinate seedless Tankan. After 23 years of trials, Taiwan, China's first new hybrid variety, "Tainung No. 1 Jinxiang," was bred, and variety rights were obtained in September of the 97th year of the Republic of China.
This variety has spreading branches and is easy to manage in tree shape. It has shown high yield in Meishan, Chiayi, Dongshan, Tainan, and the Chiayi Branch of the Agricultural Research Institute, with no obvious alternate bearing. The peel is orange to red-orange, and the flesh is orange. It has high sugar and acid content and a strong aroma. The Brix is 12-15 degrees, and the acid content is 0.9-1.2%. The juice rate is 50-55% (the juice rate of Valencia, the world's main citrus juice variety, is about 50%, and that of Liucheng is 40-45%). The flesh is soft and easier to juice than ordinary sweet oranges, making it very suitable for juicing with a household electric juicer. The juice is deep orange, deeper than Valencia and Liucheng, and can be developed into a fresh-squeezed juice or fresh-eating variety. This variety's flesh is soft while the segment membrane is relatively tough, so for fresh eating the fruit should be cut crosswise and then into several slices. The number of seeds is about 10 to 15. The maturity period in the southern region is during January. In terms of cultivation management, there is no problem of overlapping flowering and harvest periods as with Valencia.
