Use the Right Disinfection and Sterilization Methods to Keep Plants Healthier and Growing Stronger
Sterilization is an important means of disease control in agricultural and horticultural production, referring to the killing or inhibition of harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi through physical, chemical or biological methods. In home flower growing and planting, pathogens can lurk in soil, seeds, bulbs, tools and even flower pots, and timely sterilization can effectively reduce problems such as root rot, damping-off and powdery mildew.
Common sterilization methods fall into two categories: physical and chemical. Physical sterilization includes sun-exposing soil, scalding seeds with boiling water, and steam disinfection; these are simple to carry out and leave no chemical residue, making them suitable for small-scale use. Chemical sterilization relies on various fungicides, such as carbendazim, mancozeb and potassium permanganate solution. When using them, dilute according to the instructions; too high a concentration easily causes phytotoxicity and instead harms the plants.
In actual planting, sterilization is mostly used at several key stages. Disinfecting soil before sowing or transplanting can reduce soil-borne diseases; soaking seeds and bulbs for disinfection helps improve germination and survival rates; disinfecting wounds and tools after pruning can prevent pathogens from entering through the cuts. During the rainy season and in hot, humid environments, diseases spread easily, so daily sterilization deserves even more attention during such periods.
It should be noted that sterilization cannot rely on chemicals alone. Long-term single use of the same fungicide makes pathogens prone to developing resistance, so fungicides should be rotated and combined with management measures such as improving ventilation and controlling watering. Spraying is best done in the morning or evening, avoiding the high-temperature period at noon. Only by adhering to prevention first and combining prevention with control can plants stay healthy over the long term.
