When people talk about Furano, they immediately think of lavender; it is a spot known to everyone. The propagation methods for lavender are very simple, but the results seen here today were only achieved through a great deal of effort.
What made lavender famous was Tomita Farm.

Lavender cultivation began here in 1958, with the aim of producing perfume from it. But the initial 1,000 sq m lavender field ran into a series of difficulties. The perfume was finally produced successfully, but because synthetic fragrances became widespread, sales of lavender essential oil fell sharply.
At the time the farm was in difficulty, but in 1976 the Japanese National Railways (today's JR trains) calendar used a photograph of the lavender field, making it an overnight focus of attention.

In 1977 the farm switched to making dried flower potpourri, which increased sales, and later it developed an original perfume that was well received by consumers.
Lavender is difficult to grow and cannot develop without sufficient sunlight. Preparing the soil and pruning excess branches and leaves are also very important. Lavender dislikes overly humid environments and requires wide, well-ventilated land. Furano's climate and soil are both good, making it suitable for growing high-quality lavender.

The appeal of lavender lies not only in its cute purple appearance; it can also be made into various items. For example, dried flower potpourri, essential oil, herbal tea, skincare oil, cake, scones, soft-serve ice cream and more, making it a versatile all-purpose herb.
[Dried flower potpourri] It is said to be effective for antibacterial, sterilizing and insect-repelling purposes.
[Essential oil, herbal tea] which can calm and relax the nerves

2. Best time to visit and viewing period
Conclusion: The best viewing period is mid to late July, and the earlier you go on the day, the better!
For Furano's lavender, the viewing period differs by variety and farm. The Okamurasaki lavender that can be seen at any farm has a viewing period in mid-July. Other varieties are classified as follows.
■ Koi Murasaki Hayazaki → Period: early July (mainly for ornamental use)
■ Yotei → Period: early July (mainly used as a cosmetic fragrance)
■ Hanamoia → Period: mid-July (mainly used as essential oil)
■ Okamurasaki → Period: mid to late July (mainly used as dried flower potpourri and essential oil)

There are also other farms growing lavender other than the varieties above, and at some spots the viewing period is affected by changes in elevation. But as noted above, the period when you can see the fullest bloom is mid to late July. (The viewing period varies each year with rainfall and weather, so this period is for reference only.)
