The Neijiang black pig is an excellent local pig breed native to Neijiang, Sichuan.
The Neijiang black pig is an excellent local pig breed native to Neijiang City and the surrounding areas of Sichuan Province, and it is also a traditional black pig breed with a long history of rearing in the Sichuan-Chongqing region. It is known for its strong adaptability, tolerance of coarse feed and good meat flavor, and is one of China's precious local livestock and poultry genetic resources, holding an important place in the conservation, development and utilization of local pig breeds.
In appearance, the Neijiang black pig has a completely black coat, a fairly large head, obvious wrinkles on the forehead, a relatively short snout, and medium-sized ears that droop forward. Its body is relatively broad and deep, with a slightly concave back and loin, a large and somewhat drooping belly, and short, thick, sturdy legs, giving it a well-proportioned overall structure. Adult pigs are relatively large in build, with slightly thick skin and long, coarse bristles; these features make it easy to identify among local pig breeds.
In terms of production performance, the Neijiang black pig is gentle in temperament, matures early and fattens easily, and has a strong ability to utilize green and coarse feed, making it suitable for a variety of rearing conditions in rural areas. Sows have relatively good reproductive performance and strong maternal instinct, and their milk production can meet the nursing needs of piglets. Compared with introduced lean-type breeds, its growth rate and lean meat percentage are relatively low, but it is rich in intramuscular fat and has a rosy meat color, and dishes such as twice-cooked pork and cured pork made from it have a particularly outstanding flavor, making it highly popular with consumers.
When rearing, green fodder can be combined with concentrate feed according to local feed resources, which both reduces costs and suits its tolerance of coarse feed. In daily management, barn hygiene and disease prevention and control should be well handled; when introducing breeding stock, choose a reputable breeding pig farm and take care to avoid inbreeding. With the development of the premium native pig market, combining purebred conservation with crossbreeding utilization is becoming the main direction for developing the Neijiang black pig industry.
