Field Management Measures for Panax notoginseng Determine Medicinal Yield and Quality
Field management measures for Panax notoginseng refer to the routine care practices adopted during its cultivation, covering aspects such as light, water, nutrients, and pests and diseases. Panax notoginseng is a perennial shade-loving medicinal plant with a long growth cycle, and whether management is adequate directly affects the yield and quality of its underground roots.
Panax notoginseng prefers shade and fears strong light, so a shade shed must be built during cultivation, and the light transmittance should be adjusted according to seasonal changes. In summer, the shading should be appropriately densified, while in spring and autumn it can be slightly loosened, keeping the plants in soft, diffused light. Panax notoginseng likes moisture but fears waterlogging; during drought, water frequently in small amounts, and in the rainy season drain promptly to keep the bed surface moist without becoming waterlogged.
For fertilization, apply light doses frequently, mainly with fully decomposed organic fertilizer, and supplement appropriately with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilizer that causes spindly overgrowth. Field weeds should be removed promptly, and intertillage and soil loosening should be shallow rather than deep, so as not to damage the relatively shallow root system.
Disease is the focus of Panax notoginseng management. Common ones include root rot, black spot, and damping-off, which mostly occur under high temperature and high humidity conditions. In daily care, ventilation should be strengthened and humidity inside the shed controlled. When diseased plants are found, they should be pulled out promptly and taken outside the field for disposal. After winter sets in, the aboveground parts wither, so residual plants and fallen leaves should be cleared away and mulching for warmth should be done well to help Panax notoginseng overwinter safely and lay a good foundation for the next year's growth.
