Key Techniques for Growing Red Cabbage: Scientific Cultivation Management for High Yields
Red cabbage, also known as purple cabbage or red kraut, is a variety of head cabbage, named for the purplish-red color of its leaf heads. It is fairly adaptable, prefers a cool and moist climate, has good cold tolerance, and is rich in anthocyanins and various vitamins, making it very popular in the market.
For growing red cabbage, it is best to choose a plot with flat terrain, deep soil, and convenient drainage and irrigation, with a previous crop that is preferably not a cruciferous plant. The sowing time can be arranged flexibly according to the local climate, generally focusing on spring and autumn; in areas with high summer temperatures, shade and cooling measures should be taken when raising seedlings.
Before sowing, the seeds can be soaked in warm water to promote germination, and the seedbed should be kept moist but not waterlogged. When the seedlings reach a certain size, they should be pricked out in time, and once they have five or six true leaves, they can be transplanted; row and plant spacing should be reasonably arranged according to the characteristics of the variety, and after transplanting, water thoroughly to help the seedlings recover.
Field management should focus on regulating water and fertilizer. The rosette stage and head-forming stage require more water and nutrients, so an appropriate amount of fertilizer can be applied along with watering to promote firm leaf heads. At the same time, pay attention to cultivation and weeding, and promptly control common pests and diseases such as soft rot, black rot, and cabbage caterpillars. Moderately reducing watering before harvest helps improve quality.
When the leaf heads are fully swollen and fairly firm, they can be harvested in batches; harvesting too late can easily lead to head splitting. Overall, growing red cabbage is not very difficult; as long as sowing time, water and fertilizer management, and pest and disease control are handled well, a good harvest can be obtained.
