Early-maturing Autumn Chinese Cabbage: Planting Methods and Key Field Management Points
Planting early-maturing autumn Chinese cabbage means sowing around the Beginning of Autumn (Liqiu) and choosing cabbage varieties with a shorter growing period, so the crop can be harvested before late autumn and early winter. Compared with mid- and late-maturing varieties, early-maturing varieties grow faster and head up earlier, which helps them avoid late-season low temperatures. They are well suited to an early market launch and can also fill the gap in autumn vegetable supply.
When planting, choose early-maturing varieties that are heat-tolerant, disease-resistant and have a short growing period. Before sowing, prepare the soil carefully and apply plenty of base fertilizer. Sowing is generally carried out around the Beginning of Autumn (Liqiu), mostly by direct seeding. After emergence, thin and then final-thin the seedlings in good time, keeping a reasonable plant and row spacing to avoid overly dense planting, which can cause excessive vegetative growth and worsen disease.
The core of field management is regulating fertilizer and water. The rosette stage and the heading stage are the peaks of nutrient demand. Nitrogen fertilizer can be applied with irrigation, along with a suitable supplement of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, to promote full leaves and firm heads. Watering should follow the principle of alternating between dry and moist soil, and after rain, drain water promptly to prevent waterlogging in the field from triggering diseases such as soft rot.
In the middle and late stages of growth, pay attention to controlling common pests such as cabbage caterpillars and aphids, and also watch out for tipburn in Chinese cabbage. Tipburn is mostly related to calcium deficiency, uneven watering or improper fertilization. Balanced fertilization and stable moisture can noticeably reduce the symptoms. Once the heads are firm, harvest in batches; harvesting too late can easily lead to head splitting or frost damage. Besides being eaten fresh, the harvested cabbage is also often used to make pickled sour cabbage.
