Purple cabbage is the purple variety of head cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) in the genus Brassica of the crucifer family. Its head is purple-red and rich in anthocyanins. During the growing period it is easily attacked by various diseases, commonly including soft rot, black rot, downy mildew and sclerotinia rot, and these often occur more severely in plots with high temperature and high humidity, continuous cropping or poor drainage.

The symptoms of several major diseases each have their own characteristics. Soft rot mostly invades through wounds; affected parts soften and rot and give off an off-odor, and it tends to become epidemic after days of rain. Black rot typically shows yellow-brown lesions at the leaf margins that spread inward, often in a V shape. Downy mildew forms angular yellow spots on the leaf surface that are bounded by the veins, and when humidity is high a white mold layer can be seen on the underside of the leaves. Only by distinguishing the symptoms can you treat them correctly.

Control should be based on agricultural measures: rotate with non-cruciferous crops, choose varieties with better disease resistance, and disinfect the seeds before sowing. Open drainage ditches in the field to avoid waterlogging, plant at a reasonable density to maintain ventilation and light penetration, and fertilize with a balance of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, avoiding excessive nitrogen. After harvesting the previous crop, clean the field promptly and carry diseased residues out of the field for disposal to reduce the buildup of disease sources.

The rainy season is the peak period for disease. After heavy rain, drain water promptly to lower humidity, strengthen inspections, pull out diseased plants as early as possible and take them away from the field, and disinfect the diseased planting holes. In the early stage of disease, choose the appropriate pesticide for spraying according to the type of disease, taking care to rotate chemicals, and when spraying, cover the underside of the leaves and the base of the plants. At the same time, control insect pests such as aphids and cabbage caterpillars to reduce wounds, which can also lower the chances of pathogen infection.

Overall, disease control in purple cabbage emphasizes prevention over cure. By combining the raising of strong seedlings, improvement of the field environment and routine monitoring, and by detecting and handling problems early, the disease can be effectively controlled and the quality and yield of the heads ensured.
