Disease Control Methods and Field Management Tips for Leaf Lettuce
Leaf lettuce is a leafy vegetable of the genus Lactuca in the Asteraceae family. Its leaves are narrow and long with a pale green color, it grows quickly and has a short harvest period, and it is widely planted in many regions. Because the leaves are tender and planting density is relatively high, it is easily infected by various diseases during the growing period, so good disease control is the key to ensuring yield and quality.
The common diseases of leaf lettuce in production mainly include downy mildew, soft rot, sclerotinia rot and gray mold. Downy mildew mostly occurs under low temperature and high humidity; pale yellow patches appear on the upper surface of the leaves, and white mold grows on the underside. Soft rot often starts with rotting at the base of the leaf stalk and is accompanied by an off odor, mostly caused by waterlogging or infection through wounds. Sclerotinia rot damages the stem base near the ground, and white mycelium can be seen when it is humid.
Disease control in leaf lettuce should be based on agricultural measures. Practice crop rotation when planting, and avoid continuous cropping with vegetables of the same family such as lettuce and romaine lettuce; choose plots with good drainage and use raised-bed cultivation to prevent waterlogging in the field; plant at a reasonable density to maintain ventilation and light penetration; watering should be done in small amounts and more frequently, avoiding flood irrigation; diseased plants should be removed promptly and taken out of the field for disposal to reduce the spread of pathogens.
In the early stage of the disease, diseased leaves can first be removed, and then appropriate pesticides can be selected for control according to the type of disease, taking care to rotate chemicals and observe the pre-harvest interval. In greenhouse cultivation, ventilation should also be strengthened to reduce humidity and avoid long periods of dew on the leaf surface. As long as daily management is in place and problems are detected and handled early, most diseases of leaf lettuce can be effectively controlled.
