How to Keep Blood Parrot Cichlids: A Detailed Guide to Water Quality, Temperature and Feeding
The blood parrot cichlid is a small to medium-sized tropical ornamental fish produced by artificial crossbreeding, generally considered to be a hybrid of several species in the cichlid family. It has a short, round body, entirely bright red or orange-red, with a beak-shaped mouth that cannot fully close, giving it an endearing appearance. Because of its festive body color, many aquarium hobbyists keep it as a species that offers both ornamental value and auspicious meaning.
The blood parrot cichlid is mild-tempered, likes to swim in groups, and has strong adaptability to its environment, but its mouth structure is special, so its ability to compete for food is weaker than that of ordinary fish, and its demand for dissolved oxygen in the water is relatively high. The keeping water temperature should be maintained at around 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, and the water quality is best slightly acidic to neutral; when changing water, take care that the temperature difference is not too large.
In daily management, keep filtration and aeration in good condition, change water regularly and in appropriate amounts, and feed mainly artificial compound feed, which can be supplemented with color-enhancing feed to help maintain its vivid body color; feed small amounts more often and avoid leftover food spoiling the water quality. When keeping it in a community tank, avoid fish that are aggressive or very different in size, so that the blood parrot cichlid does not lose color or get injured from stress.
A common problem during keeping is that the body color becomes lighter or turns black, which is mostly related to water quality fluctuations, stress or insufficient light, and it generally recovers gradually once the environment is stable. If white spot disease, fin rot or similar conditions are found, it should be isolated promptly, the water quality adjusted, and medication used as appropriate. Overall, the blood parrot cichlid is not difficult to keep; manage the water temperature, water quality and oxygen well, and it will stay red, bright and lively.
