Cactus is the collective name for plants in the family Cactaceae, a typical group of succulents native to the arid and semi-arid regions of the Americas. To cope with water-scarce environments, its leaves have evolved into spines, and it relies on its thick, fleshy stems to store water and nutrients, making it extremely drought-tolerant.

In terms of characteristics, cactus roots are relatively shallow but widely spread, allowing them to quickly absorb water after rainfall; the spines on the surface not only reduce water evaporation but also protect the plant from being eaten by animals. Many varieties produce brightly colored flowers in the right season, giving them high ornamental value.

The cactus family is quite large, with common examples including the spherical golden barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii), the columnar cactus, and plants of the genus Opuntia with their flat stem segments. The dragon fruit commonly seen in daily life is actually the fruit of a cactus-family plant, showing that this family is not far removed from our diet.

Caring for cacti is not difficult; the key is plenty of sunlight and little watering. It is recommended to use well-draining sandy soil and to water only after the potting soil has completely dried out, avoiding waterlogging that causes root rot. In winter, when temperatures are low, reduce watering and keep the plant warm; in summer, maintain good ventilation.

Besides their ornamental value, the stem segments and fruits of some cacti are edible and are quite a distinctive ingredient in some arid regions. The most common reason for failing to grow cacti is watering too frequently; as long as you restrain your hand and provide enough light, even beginners can easily grow them well.
