The ecological Laiwu black pig refers to Laiwu black pigs raised using ecological farming methods. The Laiwu black pig originated in Laiwu and surrounding areas of Shandong Province. It is a local pig breed with a long history and has been included in the national list of livestock and poultry genetic resources for protection, and it is representative among the North China type local pig breeds.

In terms of breed characteristics, the Laiwu black pig has an all-black coat, a medium body size, and a sturdy constitution, with relatively thick and long bristles. It is tolerant of coarse feed, has strong adaptability and disease resistance, and has good maternal instincts, with reproductive performance that is quite good among local pig breeds. Its greatest advantage in meat quality lies in its relatively high intramuscular fat content, with a marbled pattern on the cut surface, a tender and juicy texture, and a rich aroma.

Ecological farming is the core of the ecological Laiwu black pig. In farming, a combination of pen rearing and grazing is often used, giving the pigs ample space to move around and allowing them to forage and root in the soil among trees or on slopes. The daily diet is mainly based on grains such as corn, soybean meal, and wheat bran combined with green fodder, and growth-promoting drugs are generally not used. The rearing period is noticeably longer than that of ordinary commercial white pigs, which is also an important condition for the accumulation of its flavor.

Because of slow growth and high farming costs, the pork of ecological Laiwu black pigs is usually more expensive than ordinary pork. When purchasing, attention should be paid to information such as the place of origin and the farming method, and care should be taken to avoid ordinary black pork being passed off as this breed. Developing ecological Laiwu black pig farming is conducive to the protection of local breed resources and also meets consumers' demand for high-quality and safe pork, combining both economic and ecological value.
