The raspberry is the fruit of plants in the genus Rubus, family Rosaceae. It is an aggregate berry, formed by many small drupelets clustered together on the same receptacle. When ripe it is mostly red, though there are also yellow and black types. The flesh is soft and juicy, sweet and tart, with a rich aroma. It can be eaten fresh or is often processed into jam, juice, fruit wine and other foods.

Common raspberries are divided by fruit color into red raspberry, yellow raspberry, black raspberry and so on. By fruiting habit they are further divided into single-crop and double-crop types: double-crop varieties can bear fruit twice a year, while single-crop varieties generally yield one harvest per year. Raspberry canes are mostly covered with fine prickles and have relatively shallow roots. Propagation is usually done with root suckers or by division, and a well-managed patch can be harvested continuously for many years.

For planting raspberries, choose a sunny site with good drainage, and preferably loose, fertile soil. Routine management should include trellising and tying in the canes, promptly pruning out old and weak canes, and keeping the patch well ventilated and exposed to light. Ripe fruit has thin, delicate skin and does not tolerate squeezing or long-distance transport, so it must be harvested promptly and sold as quickly as possible, which is also a fairly common difficulty in the growing process.

Many people easily confuse raspberry with raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus) medicinal material and with mulberry. What is generally called "fupenzi" refers to the dried immature fruit of plants in the genus Rubus, mostly used as a medicinal material; mulberry, on the other hand, is the fruit of the mulberry tree and is not the same kind of plant as raspberry, with clear differences in both appearance and taste. Raspberry contains various vitamins and other nutrients, and is popular in the fresh fruit market, at pick-your-own orchards and in the deep-processing sector. Some rural areas also develop it as a specialty planting project to increase income.
