Four-season osmanthus can bloom multiple times a year: understand its characteristics and care methods
Four-season osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the Oleaceae family, and one of the important cultivar groups of osmanthus. Unlike the common golden osmanthus, silver osmanthus and reddish osmanthus, which bloom in a concentrated flush each autumn, four-season osmanthus can bloom multiple times a year under suitable climate conditions, hence its name. Its flowers tend toward yellow-white, with a clear, gentle fragrance; though not as intense as that of golden or reddish osmanthus, it makes up for this with a long flowering period and a longer season of enjoyment.
Among the four-season osmanthus cultivar group, common cultivated cultivars include Rixiang Gui, Foding Zhu and Tianxiang Taige, which differ slightly in flowering frequency, flower shape and plant form; some are suited to open-ground planting for landscaping, while others are better for container display. Overall, four-season osmanthus has a compact form, leathery glossy leaves and strong adaptability, and is very common in courtyard greening, roadside landscapes and home containers.
When caring for four-season osmanthus, light and water are key. It likes a sunny environment; insufficient light easily leads to leggy branches and leaves and fewer flowers. Watering should follow the principle of not watering until dry, and watering thoroughly when you do, to avoid waterlogging in the pot causing root rot. A loose, fertile, well-drained slightly acidic soil is best; during the growing season, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can be added appropriately to promote flower bud differentiation, and light pruning after flowering helps maintain an attractive plant shape.
Many flower growers find their four-season osmanthus blooms little, which is mostly related to insufficient light, insufficient nutrients or improper pruning; after adjustments, it can gradually improve. Four-season osmanthus has a long flowering period and a mild fragrance; besides ornamental use, its flowers can also be used to make osmanthus tea, osmanthus cake and other foods, making it an excellent courtyard plant that combines ornamental value and practical use.
