Dianthus is a perennial herbaceous flower with rich colors and easy care.
Shizhuzi, commonly known as dianthus or China pink, is a perennial herbaceous flower of the genus Dianthus in the family Caryophyllaceae. It is also often called Luoyang flower or China pink among the people. The plant is not tall, with upright clustered stems and slender, line-like leaves. The flowers are borne singly or several clustered at the tips of the branches, and the petal edges often have fine teeth. There are many flower colors, including pink, red, white and bicolor, and it is very eye-catching when planted in masses.
There are many species in the genus Dianthus. Besides the common dianthus, there are also similar species such as Dianthus plumarius, Dianthus barbatus and Dianthus caryophyllus. Among them, Dianthus caryophyllus is the carnation commonly seen in flower shops. It belongs to the same family and genus as Shizhuzi and is somewhat similar in form. Different varieties differ in plant height, flower diameter and heat tolerance, so suitable types can be selected according to use when planting.
Shizhuzi likes a sunny, cool and dry environment and has good cold tolerance, but it fears waterlogging. Planting should choose well-drained sandy soil. Water according to the principle of watering when dry and stopping when wet, and pay attention to drainage during the rainy season. Propagation is mainly by sowing and cuttings, and it is easier to survive when done in spring and autumn. Removing spent flowers promptly after blooming helps the plant recover and promotes reblooming.
As a tough and easy-to-grow traditional flower, Shizhuzi is often used for flowerbed edging, courtyard ground cover and rock garden accents, and it is also suitable for potted ornamental use. The most common problem in daily care is root rot caused by overwatering. As long as water is controlled well and enough light is given, it can bloom as expected year after year, making it a garden plant that even beginners can easily manage.
