Lettuce Disease Prevention and Control Methods and Key Field Management Points
Lettuce disease prevention and control refers to the process of comprehensively applying agricultural, physical, biological and chemical means to prevent and manage the fungal, bacterial and viral diseases commonly seen during lettuce growth. Lettuce leaves are tender and high in water content, and the growth cycle is short; once infected, disease spreads rapidly, affecting not only yield but also reducing market quality, so prevention and control work needs to run through the entire growing period.
Common lettuce diseases in production include downy mildew, soft rot, gray mold, sclerotinia rot and viral diseases. Downy mildew mostly occurs under low-temperature, high-humidity conditions, with pale yellow patches appearing on the upper surface of leaves and white mold growing on the underside; soft rot often invades through wounds, causing the head to soften and rot with an off-odor, and is especially severe in hot, rainy seasons.
Prevention should be the main approach. Before planting, practice crop rotation and avoid continuous cropping with similar leafy vegetables; choose varieties with better disease resistance and treat the seeds. When transplanting, use a reasonable planting density and keep the field well ventilated and exposed to light. For watering, drip irrigation and similar methods are preferable, avoiding flood irrigation that leaves leaves wet for long periods; in greenhouse cultivation, also pay attention to timely ventilation to reduce humidity.
In the early stage of disease, diseased plants should be promptly removed and taken out of the field for disposal to prevent the spread of pathogens, then targeted agents should be selected according to the type of disease, with attention to rotating chemicals to delay the development of resistance. For growers using organic methods, biological control measures such as microbial preparations can be prioritized; combined with clearing and disinfecting the garden and strengthening daily management, this can also achieve good disease control results.
