Disease control in leafy greens refers to the process of taking preventive and curative measures against the various diseases that occur during the growth of leafy vegetables such as bok choy and rapeseed greens. The leaves of leafy greens are tender and their growth cycle is short, so once they become infected, the disease can spread quickly and directly affect both yield and quality; therefore, control efforts should center on prevention first and integrated management.

Common diseases of leafy greens can be broadly divided into three major categories: fungal, bacterial and viral. Fungal diseases such as downy mildew and white spot occur mostly in rainy, high-humidity environments; bacterial diseases such as soft rot often begin rotting from wounds or leaf margins and carry an off-odor; viral diseases are mostly spread by vectors such as aphids and appear as wrinkled leaves and mosaic patterns. In addition, physiological abnormalities caused by waterlogging or nutrient deficiency are often mistaken for diseases and sprayed for by mistake.

For control, start with field management: give priority to disease-resistant varieties, practice crop rotation to avoid continuous cropping, and use rational close planting to maintain ventilation and light penetration. In the rainy season, clear ditches and drain water to lower field humidity, and promptly remove diseased plant residues and carry them out of the field for disposal. Before sowing, seeds can be disinfected or coated, and strong seedlings should be raised to improve the plants' own disease resistance.

At the early stage of disease onset, first identify the type of disease, then choose chemical or microbial agents according to the symptoms, taking care to rotate chemicals to delay the development of resistance and to observe the pre-harvest interval. Many growers spray blindly as soon as they see leaf spots, which instead tends to delay the timing of control. The correct approach is to diagnose first and then apply treatment, combining it with environmental regulation at the same time, so that diseases can be steadily controlled and the normal growth of leafy greens ensured.
