Plum Blossom (Prunus mume) Detailed Guide: Morphological Characteristics, Varieties and Care Essentials
Plum blossom (Prunus mume) is a small deciduous tree in the rose family (Rosaceae) and the genus Prunus, native to China, with a long history of cultivation and one of the traditional famous flowers. It usually blooms in late winter and early spring, flowering before the leaves emerge, with colors ranging from white, pink and red, and a delicate fragrance. Along with pine and bamboo it is known as one of the "Three Friends of Winter", and it has also been designated the city flower of many cities.
There are many varieties of plum blossom. By branch posture they can be broadly divided into groups such as upright plum, weeping plum and dragon-wandering plum, with common varieties including Gongfen plum, green calyx plum (Lü'e), cinnabar plum (Zhusha) and jade butterfly plum (Yudie). Different varieties have their own features in flower color, flower shape and tree posture, some showy and some understated, and all have high ornamental value.
In cultivation, plum blossom prefers a sunny, well-ventilated environment, has strong cold and drought tolerance, and above all fears waterlogged soil. Plant it in a spot with good drainage, water only when the soil is dry and water thoroughly when you do, and after flowering prune leggy and overly dense branches appropriately, which helps it bloom abundantly the following year.
When growing plum blossom in containers at home, people often run into problems of failure to bloom or bud drop, which are mostly related to insufficient light, overwatering or too much nitrogen fertilizer. Keeping light abundant and controlling water and fertilizer reasonably can gradually improve the situation.
Plum blossom also has a wide range of uses. Its flowers can be used to scent tea, and to extract fragrance; the fruit, the plum, can be eaten fresh or processed into products such as preserved plum and smoked black plum. At the same time, the trait of plum blossom blooming alone in the cold is often used to symbolize a tough and noble character, and enjoying plum blossoms in the snow in winter and spring is a traditional elegant pastime in many places.
