Map Turtle Pictures: Get to Know This Uniquely Shaped Ornamental Turtle
The maple leaf turtle, whose scientific name is Geoemyda spengleri (black-breasted leaf turtle), is a small, semi-aquatic turtle named for the outline of its carapace, which closely resembles a maple leaf. It is mainly distributed in the mountainous areas of southern China and parts of Southeast Asia, and mostly inhabits the vicinity of streams in humid forests. It is one of the most closely watched ornamental turtles.
As seen in pictures, the most obvious feature of the maple leaf turtle is the serrated front and rear edges of its carapace, with a flat shell surface that is mostly brown or yellowish-brown, closely resembling fallen leaves on the forest floor and providing strong camouflage. The carapace usually has clear raised ridges, the head is relatively small with fairly large eyes, and some individuals also have pale markings on the sides of the head. Its plastron is mostly dark brown, which is why it is also known as the black-breasted leaf turtle.
In terms of keeping, the maple leaf turtle prefers a warm and humid environment, requiring both a water area and a land area, with attention paid to moisture retention, ventilation and stable temperatures. It is omnivorous, often feeding mainly on insects and worms, with an appropriate supplement of fruits and vegetables. Because its environmental requirements are relatively high, beginners should fully understand its living habits before keeping one.
It should be especially noted that the maple leaf turtle is a protected wild animal, and catching or trading it without authorization is illegal; appreciating it through pictures and learning about it through proper channels is the appropriate approach. When browsing pictures, focus on the serrated shell edges and the markings on the head, as these are also important details for distinguishing the maple leaf turtle from other small turtles.
