Choy Sum Disease and Pest Control Methods and Key Points for Identifying Common Diseases
Choy sum disease and pest control refers to the identification, prevention, and treatment measures for various diseases during the cultivation of choy sum. Choy sum has a short growth cycle and tender leaves, making it susceptible to infection by fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Common diseases include downy mildew, soft rot, black rot, and viral diseases, and control efforts run through the entire process from sowing to harvest.
Downy mildew mostly occurs under low temperature and high humidity, with yellow-brown patches appearing on the leaf surface and white mold growing on the underside; soft rot often begins at the base of the leaf stalk, causing rot and giving off an unpleasant odor, and is mostly spread through wounds or pest damage; black rot forms black necrotic spots along the leaf veins; viral diseases manifest as leaf crinkling and mosaic patterns, along with stunted plant growth. Familiarity with these symptoms helps with early detection and timely treatment.
Agricultural control is the foundation, including selecting disease-resistant varieties, rotating with non-cruciferous crops, disinfecting seeds before sowing, and maintaining reasonable planting density to ensure ventilation and light penetration. In the field, drainage should also be done well to avoid waterlogging and excessively high humidity, clearing ditches promptly after rain, and removing diseased plant residues to reduce the accumulation and spread of pathogens.
Chemical control should target the specific disease type with appropriate pesticides, taking care to rotate pesticides with different mechanisms of action and strictly observe safety intervals; organic cultivation can use microbial agents, botanical pesticides, and other auxiliary control measures. At the same time, controlling virus-transmitting pests such as aphids, combined with integrated field management, is necessary to effectively ensure the yield and quality of choy sum.
