White-eye disease is one of the more common eye conditions in freshwater turtles. It usually shows up as whitened, swollen eyes, with a layer of white discharge covering the surface of the eyeball. Affected turtles often cannot open their eyes, become listless, eat less, and may even refuse food entirely. If treated promptly in the early stages, most individuals can gradually recover; the longer it is delayed, the greater the harm to the turtle.

The causes of white-eye disease are usually related to water quality and nutrition. If the water in the enclosure is not changed for a long time, leftover food and waste accumulate, and bacteria multiply in large numbers, this can easily irritate the turtle's eyes and trigger infection. Long-term feeding of a single type of food and a lack of vitamin A can also lower the turtle's resistance, making eye problems more likely.

Once a turtle is found to have white-eye disease, it should be separated from other turtles as soon as possible to avoid cross-infection. The sick turtle can first be moved into clean water or kept appropriately dry, with the environment kept warm, and antibacterial eye drops or eye ointment should be used under the guidance of a veterinarian or professional. The eye discharge should be cleaned away every day. During treatment, reduce feeding of foods that are hard to digest and patiently observe the turtle's eating and eye recovery.

Daily prevention is more important than treatment. The water for keeping turtles should be changed frequently, and leftover food should be cleaned up promptly after feeding to avoid water quality deterioration. The diet should be varied and appropriately include foods rich in vitamin A. On clear, sunny days, let the turtle bask to build up its constitution. As long as the water stays clean and nutrition is balanced, the chance of red-eared sliders developing white-eye disease will be greatly reduced.
