During its growth, lettuce is susceptible to a variety of diseases, with the common ones including downy mildew, soft rot, sclerotinia rot, gray mold, and viral diseases. These diseases mostly occur under conditions of high temperature and high humidity with poor field ventilation, and once they become epidemic, they can noticeably affect leaf quality and yield. Therefore, carrying out good control work is very important for lettuce cultivation.

To control lettuce diseases, one should first start with agricultural measures. Before planting, varieties with better disease resistance can be selected, crop rotation should be practiced, and continuous cropping with similar vegetables should be avoided; disinfecting seeds before sowing can reduce the initial sources of disease. In field management, attention should be paid to reasonable close planting, maintaining ventilation and light penetration between plants, and promptly clearing ditches for drainage. After rain, especially, waterlogging in the field should be prevented.

The watering method also matters. Drip irrigation or under-film irrigation should be used as much as possible, avoiding flood irrigation that leads to excessively high humidity. During management, once diseased plants are found, they should be promptly removed and taken out of the field for disposal, and the area around the diseased planting holes should be disinfected to prevent the spread of pathogens. Cleaning up residual plants and fallen leaves after harvest also helps reduce the source base of disease for the next season.

When disease has already occurred, targeted medication is needed. Downy mildew, gray mold, sclerotinia rot, and bacterial diseases such as soft rot each have corresponding control agents, which can be selected according to the results of field diagnosis. When spraying, agents with different mechanisms of action should be used in rotation to delay the development of resistance, and the pre-harvest interval must be strictly observed to also ensure food safety.

Overall, lettuce disease control should adhere to the approach of prevention first and integrated control, combining agricultural control, physical control, biological control, and chemical control, and keeping diseases controlled at the early stage of occurrence as much as possible, so as to ensure the normal growth and final quality of lettuce.
