Gastrodia (Gastrodia elata) is a perennial herb in the orchid family and a traditional Chinese medicinal material, with its underground tubers used as medicine. It has no green leaves and no true roots, so it cannot carry out photosynthesis; the nutrients it needs for growth are mainly supplied by Armillaria mellea (honey fungus), which makes its cultivation clearly different from that of ordinary crops.

To grow Gastrodia, the first step is choosing a good plot, preferably loose, airy, well-drained sandy soil, in a cool and moist environment, avoiding waterlogging and direct strong sunlight. Before planting, fungus wood carrying Armillaria mellea must be cultivated in advance, usually by inoculating broadleaf wooden sticks such as oak; the quality of the fungus wood directly determines whether Gastrodia can grow normally.

Planting is mostly done from the dormant period to before early-spring sprouting. Select undamaged white tubers or small tubers free of disease spots as seed tubers, place them on both sides of the fungus wood, then cover with humus soil or sandy soil, with a thickness that covers the seed tubers and leaves a little extra. After planting, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged; in summer, provide shade to lower the temperature, and in winter, appropriately thicken the mulch to protect against cold.

In daily management, Gastrodia fears waterlogging most of all, so during the rainy season, clear ditches and drain promptly to prevent tuber rot; during the growing period, do not frequently turn the soil, and there is no need to apply topdressing as with ordinary crops, since all nutrients are supplied by Armillaria mellea. Harvesting is generally done after the tubers have fully enlarged and entered dormancy; dig gently to avoid bruising the tubers and affecting quality. Once you have a good grasp of fungus wood cultivation, water regulation and temperature management, growing Gastrodia will be much more reliable.
