Geranium is the collective name for plants in the genus Pelargonium of the family Geraniaceae. It originated in southern Africa and is now a very popular potted ornamental flower, often called "foreign hydrangea" in everyday speech. Many people have only seen the red-flowered ball type at the flower market, but once you look through geranium pictures you realize that this family is far richer in flower colors and plant forms than you might imagine.

In the pictures, geranium flowers usually gather into umbel-like clusters, with dozens of small flowers packed together and looking like a rounded flower ball from a distance. Common flower colors include red, pink, white, purple, and various bicolors. Its leaves are mostly round or kidney-shaped, and some varieties have a ring of dark markings on the leaf surface, with wavy, undulating leaf margins, giving it a texture clearly different from ordinary herbaceous flowers.

Common geraniums can roughly be divided into several categories, including upright varieties with a compact habit and full flower balls, varieties with flexible stems that are suitable for hanging baskets, and scented-leaf types known for the fragrance of their leaves. When identifying them from pictures, focus on plant form, leaf shape, and the way the flowers are arranged, which will be more helpful for buying and for later care.

One thing to keep in mind is that some varieties have leaves with a distinctive scent; some people find it fresh and pleasant, while others do not take to it well, and this is something pictures cannot convey, so it is best to actually handle the plant before making a choice. In addition, looking at more pictures of different growth stages, such as young seedlings, full bloom, and a plant bursting with flowers, will give you a more realistic idea of its ornamental effect and help you avoid judging from a single pretty photo. When cared for properly, geraniums have a long flowering period and can bloom in succession into a mass of color, making them very suitable for decorating balconies and windowsills.
