Tree bonsai is a form of bonsai that uses woody plants as the main material, cultivating trees into miniature natural landscapes through techniques such as pruning, wiring and grafting. It emphasizes seeing the large in the small: after shaping, a small tree can often present the mood of gnarled old trees and the wild charm of mountain forests, making it a much-loved art in traditional horticulture.

By tree species, tree bonsai can be broadly divided into common types such as conifer and cypress, deciduous broadleaf, and flowering and fruiting types. Conifer and cypress types such as Buddhist pine (Podocarpus macrophyllus), black pine (Pinus thunbergii) and Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis) have branches that tolerate wiring and are suited to expressing an aged, rustic form; deciduous broadleaf types such as Chinese elm (Ulmus parvifolia), Sageretia thea and orange jasmine (Murraya paniculata) have strong sprouting ability and take shape relatively quickly; flowering and fruiting types such as plum blossom, pomegranate and golden bullet tree (Diospyros cathayensis) offer the pleasure of both viewing the form and enjoying the flowers and fruit.

In terms of care, tree bonsai requires attention to the balance of light, watering and pruning. Most species prefer ample light and should be placed in a ventilated, sunny spot; water according to the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings, avoiding long-term water accumulation in the pot that causes root rot. During the growing season, pinch out growing tips and remove buds in time to control leggy branches, and when necessary combine this with wiring to adjust the direction of branches and trunks, gradually perfecting the overall shape.

In addition, the shaping of tree bonsai is a long-term process of accumulation, emphasizing designing according to the tree and proceeding step by step; beginners can start with simple pruning and need not rush for quick results. As long as you care for it patiently and observe diligently, an ordinary plant can gradually be grown into a bonsai with graceful posture, adding a touch of natural elegance to the home environment.
