Bonsai art is an important branch of traditional Chinese garden art. Using plants, rocks and soil as its main materials, it condenses natural landscapes into a tiny pot through artistic conception and horticultural skill, and has long been praised as a silent poem and a three-dimensional painting. It stresses originating from nature yet rising above it, so that within a single pot one can take in the mood of mountains, rivers and forests.

Broadly speaking, bonsai is generally divided into two major categories: tree-stump bonsai and landscape bonsai. Tree-stump bonsai takes a tree as its main subject and focuses on the overall posture of roots, trunk, branches and leaves; common materials include pine, Buddhist pine (Podocarpus macrophyllus), cypress and elm. Landscape bonsai, by contrast, is based mainly on rocks, supplemented with moss, small grasses and ornaments, to express mountain-and-water scenery.

Making bonsai requires technique, and the commonly used methods include wiring, pruning, root exposure and grafting. Wire wrapping can adjust the direction of branches and trunk, while pruning is used to control tree shape and encourage branching. In terms of styling there are many forms, such as formal upright, slanting, cascade and forest; beginners can start with tree species that tolerate pruning and are easy to keep alive, and practice step by step.

As for care, because the potting soil is limited, bonsai requires attention to watering, fertilizing, repotting and pest and disease control. Different tree species vary considerably in their light and water requirements and should be treated accordingly. Bonsai is both a fine ornamental and a way to cultivate temperament and decorate the home. As the years of cultivation increase, the work often gains more charm, so it is also often regarded as a collectible work of art.
