Holly is a common landscaping tree species, and the correct methods must be mastered when growing it.
Holly is the general term for plants in the genus Ilex of the family Aquifoliaceae. Most are evergreen trees or shrubs, with leathery, glossy leaves that stay green through all four seasons, which is how it got its name. It has a neat tree form, strong sprouting ability and tolerance to pruning. It is a very common tree species in landscaping across both northern and southern China, and is also often made into bonsai for display and appreciation.
There are many species in the genus Ilex. Common ones include large-leaved holly, red-fruited holly, wavy-leaved holly and tortoise-shell holly. Red-fruited holly bears bright red fruit in autumn and winter, with a long fruiting period and outstanding ornamental effect; wavy-leaved holly has wavy leaf margins and a compact plant shape, is suitable for pruning and shaping, and is an excellent material for making bonsai. Some tree species have hard, leathery leaves and a shape similar to holly; when purchasing, they can be distinguished by leaf shape and the characteristics of flowers and fruit.
For growing holly, choose soil with a deep layer and good drainage, and the planting position should ensure sufficient light. It likes a humid environment, and water supply should be maintained during the peak growing season, but waterlogging should be avoided; during the rainy season, pay attention to drainage to prevent flooding. Holly tolerates pruning and can be shaped in spring or after autumn, cutting out overly dense branches and leggy branches to promote lush foliage. During the growing season, apply thin fertilizer frequently, mainly with decomposed organic fertilizer.
In daily care, pay attention to environmental ventilation. Long-term stuffy and damp conditions easily cause diseases such as leaf spot, and diseased leaves should be removed promptly and treated with spray. As for insect pests, scale insects and aphids are relatively common, and regular observation is needed so they can be dealt with as early as possible. Overall, holly has strong adaptability and is relatively undemanding in management; with good watering, fertilizing and pruning, it can maintain a beautiful plant shape and stay evergreen all year round.
