The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is an evergreen shrub in the genus Euphorbia of the family Euphorbiaceae, also known as the Christmas flower, Christmas red, or Mexican flame leaf, and native to the tropical regions of Central America. Its most eye-catching part is actually the bright red bracts at the tips of the branches; the true flowers are the small yellow-green cup-shaped cyathia in the center of the bracts. Each winter and spring the top leaves turn red, setting off red against green, which is why it has become a common festive potted flower around Christmas.

Cultivated varieties are fairly diverse: besides the common scarlet type, there are also pink and white types, as well as those with broader bracts or double-flowered forms, and plants vary in height, so you can choose according to your display space and color scheme.

For care, the poinsettia prefers a warm, sunny environment and is not cold-hardy; in winter it should be kept above 10 degrees, otherwise it is prone to frost damage and leaf drop. Water by the principle of letting the soil dry before watering again, and avoid long-term waterlogging of the potting soil; when the air is dry, you can mist the leaves appropriately to raise humidity. It is also a typical short-day plant: only after being induced by short days in late autumn will the bracts turn red on schedule. One thing to note is that when the stems and leaves are broken they exude a white milky sap that may cause irritation on contact with the skin, so it is best to wear gloves when pruning.

A common problem in home cultivation is yellowing and dropping leaves, which is mostly related to a sudden drop in temperature, insufficient light, or improper watering; once you find the cause and adjust in time, the plant will recover. Pinching and pruning appropriately during the growing season can make the plant more compact with more branches, giving a better ornamental effect.
