The peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is an evergreen herbaceous plant in the genus Spathiphyllum of the family Araceae, also known as the white sail, named for its pure white spathe that resembles a raised sail. It prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment and is a common indoor foliage plant; yellowing leaves are mostly related to improper daily care.

The common causes of yellow leaves fall into several categories: too much light scorches the leaves, and the leaf tips and margins tend to turn yellow and dry out, while long-term insufficient light makes the leaf color dull and yellow. When overwatering causes root rot, the leaves often turn yellow and soft all over, whereas long-term lack of water usually yellows the lower old leaves first. In addition, temperatures that are too low and cause freezing, air that is too dry, compacted soil lacking fertilizer, or going too long without repotting can also cause the leaf color to deteriorate.

After noticing yellow leaves, first check the moisture of the potting soil and the state of the root system. If root rot is caused by waterlogging, promptly take the plant out of the pot, cut off the rotted roots, and replant it in fresh, loose, breathable soil; move plants receiving too much light to a spot with diffused light, and give those lacking light a suitable amount of additional light. In winter, pay attention to keeping the plant warm and avoid direct cold drafts. Leaves that have already turned yellow generally cannot regain their emerald green, so they can be cut off from the base of the petiole to reduce nutrient consumption.

In daily care, keep the potting soil moist but not waterlogged, apply light fertilizer frequently during the peak growing season, and pay attention to ventilation in the environment. Turn the pot regularly so the plant receives light evenly, and its growth will be more uniform. With proper care, the peace lily can maintain glossy green leaves, and its ornamental effect will be better as well.
