The difference between Wendan and pomelo is mainly reflected in variety classification and flesh taste

Many people cannot tell Wendan and pomelo apart, but in fact the two are not parallel categories. Wendan is a variety of pomelo, and both belong to the same genus Citrus in the family Rutaceae, which means Wendan is definitely a pomelo, but not all pomelos are Wendan. What people usually call Wendan mostly refers to that type of pomelo fruit with a smaller fruit shape and a clear, sweet flavor.

In appearance, ordinary pomelo fruits are relatively large, mostly spherical or pear-shaped, with relatively thick rind, and a single fruit has a substantial weight. The fruit shape of Wendan is relatively small and delicate, often obovate with a small top and a large bottom, or nearly gourd-shaped, with a relatively thin rind, and after ripening the fruit surface is yellow, making the whole fruit look more elegant.

There are also differences in taste. Wendan flesh is tender and melts in the mouth, with abundant juice, a relatively mild sweet-and-sour balance, and often a faint fresh fragrance. Pomelo varieties are much richer, such as the common honey pomelo, Shatian pomelo, and others, with a wide range of flavors, some intensely sweet and some rather sour, and the flesh color also differs between white flesh and red flesh.

When selecting either Wendan or pomelo, you can first check whether the fruit shape is well proportioned and whether the skin is smooth and fine, then weigh it in your hand; one that feels heavy usually has more juice. After buying it, just store it in a cool, ventilated place, and eat it as soon as possible after peeling, so the flavor and texture will be better.
