Tiegucao is a traditional famous variety of Cymbidium ensifolium, often referred to interchangeably with Tiegusu by orchid enthusiasts, and named for its thin, hard, upright leaves full of bone-like strength. It belongs to the Sijilan group of the genus Cymbidium in the orchid family, has a long history of cultivation, is quite widely spread in the Fujian area, and is one of the representative varieties among pure-hearted orchids.
The most prominent feature of Tiegucao lies in its leaf posture. The leaves are slender yet thick and hard, mostly growing semi-upright or obliquely upright, with a rather dark green leaf color, giving an overall impression of distinct sinews and bones, and appearing quite vigorous when viewed. The flowers generally bloom between summer and autumn, with a pale, clean, and elegant flower color, mostly pure-hearted, and a delicate fragrance, with several flowers per scape, making it excellent for both foliage viewing and flower appreciation.
Within the Tiegucao series, quite a few varieties and ornamental lines have also been derived, such as Tiegubaiya, Dayetiegusu (Fuzhou He), and Tiegu Ruiyu Yi, some winning out by their bud color, others excelling in lotus-type flowers or leaf variegation, together forming the family tree of this branch and also providing orchid enthusiasts with diverse choices.
In terms of care, Tiegucao likes a warm, humid, and well-ventilated environment, and is best planted in loose, breathable potting medium, with soft diffused light being ideal. Watering should follow the principle of drying before watering and wetting thoroughly after, avoiding waterlogging and root rot, and during the growing season a thin fertilizer can be applied frequently. Although it is known for being hardy and easygoing, attention should still be paid to shading and insulation during hot, stuffy periods or low-temperature frost, and by routinely watching out for common pests such as scale insects, it can be grown with strong roots and lush leaves and bloom every year.
