Lanxiangyuan is a flower name with a distinctly Chinese orchid (guolan) flavor. Among orchid enthusiasts it is usually used to refer to an orchid variety, and some growers also use it as the name of their own orchid garden or flower shop. The character for fragrance points to the orchid's most enchanting quality, while the character for destiny conveys the affection of a person meeting an orchid, making it elegant and easy to remember when read aloud.

In terms of groups, the great family of Chinese orchids includes Cymbidium goeringii, Cymbidium faberi, Cymbidium ensifolium, Cymbidium tortisepalum, Cymbidium sinense, and others, and elegant flower names are common in all of these categories. Most of these traditional Chinese orchids have a delicate fragrance and graceful leaves, with flowering times that vary by species: Cymbidium ensifolium can bloom several times a year, while Cymbidium goeringii and Cymbidium faberi mostly send up their buds around early spring, so there is something to enjoy in every season.

As for care, Chinese orchids like a warm, humid, well-ventilated, semi-shaded environment. The growing medium should be loose, breathable and free-draining, and can be mixed from bark, kiryu stone (a Japanese horticultural stone), and similar materials; watering follows the principle of letting the medium dry before watering again, and it is better to keep things on the dry side than to let water accumulate and rot the roots. During the growing season, add a dilute liquid fertilizer, provide appropriate shade in summer, and take care to keep them warm in winter, and the orchids will grow strong roots and vigorous shoots.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are many orchids on the market with the same or similar names, so when buying you should judge by the actual plant's leaf shape, flower color and fragrance, and it is best to refer to real photos of plants with buds or in flower, rather than ordering on the basis of the name alone. A newly acquired orchid can first be placed in a ventilated spot with indirect light to recover, and once it has adapted to the environment it can be moved to normal care, which will give a higher survival rate.
