Characteristics of Large-Flowered Plants and Key Care Points for Common Large-Flowered Ornamental Plants
"Large-flowered" (Da Hua) is a common descriptive term in horticulture and floriculture, used to refer to varieties or types within the same group of plants whose flowers are noticeably larger and more ornamental. It is not the formal name of any plant, but rather a prefix-style designation such as Large-Flowered Cymbidium, Large-Flowered Clivia, or Large-Flowered Rose, highlighting the characteristics of large flower diameter, vivid flower color, and an imposing plant form.
There are quite a few ornamental plants that carry the "large-flowered" name. Large-Flowered Cymbidium (Cymbidium hybridum) is a large hybrid type in the orchid family, with upright flower spikes and densely packed blooms, often used as a potted plant for the Lunar New Year; Large-Flowered Clivia (Clivia miniata) has broad, thick, glossy leaves and flowers that open in clusters, and is clearly distinguished from the weeping clivia (Clivia nobilis) by plant form and flower orientation; there are also Large-Flowered Daylily, Large-Flowered Begonia, Large-Flowered Purslane, and others, mostly used for flower bed arrangements, courtyard landscaping, and home potted plants.
Large-flowered varieties are mostly developed through hybrid breeding, and their requirements for light and nutrients are more pronounced than those of ordinary varieties. If light is sufficient during the growing period and the supply of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer keeps up, flower bud differentiation proceeds smoothly; otherwise, it is easy to end up with only leaves growing and no flowers, which is also the most commonly encountered problem in care.
Routine management should also pay attention to ventilation and disease prevention. Large-Flowered Cymbidium, for example, is relatively susceptible to flower leaf virus disease, and diseased plants should be dealt with promptly when mottled or deformed leaves are found. Overall, choosing the right variety, providing sufficient light and fertilizer, and preventing pests and diseases well are the keys to successfully growing large-flowered ornamental plants.
