Silicon fertilizer is a type of fertilizer whose main active ingredient is the element silicon, mostly processed from silicate-type materials, with common varieties including silicon-calcium fertilizer, silicon-magnesium fertilizer, and others. Although silicon is not a traditional macronutrient, it has a good promoting effect on the growth of gramineous crops such as rice, wheat, and sugarcane, as well as some melons and vegetables.

In terms of its role, after being absorbed by crops, silicon is deposited in the cell walls, making the stems thick and strong and the mechanical tissues well developed, thereby enhancing lodging resistance. Silicon can also form a certain protective layer on the leaf surface, helping crops improve their resistance to pests, diseases, drought, and other adverse conditions, and it also helps to a certain extent with improving quality.

When applying silicon fertilizer, it can generally be used as a base fertilizer, evenly broadcast during land preparation and then plowed into the soil, so that it is distributed within the main active root zone. Silicon has poor mobility in soil, and deep application is more conducive to root absorption than surface application. Application on acidic soils or on plots with long-term continuous cropping and obvious silicon deficiency often shows more prominent effects.

It should be noted that silicon fertilizer cannot replace major fertilizers such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and should be applied in combination with organic fertilizer and conventional chemical fertilizers. The specific amount should be determined according to the soil's silicon status, crop type, and growth stage, avoiding blind excessive application that causes waste; only scientific matching can allow the fertilizer effect to be better brought into play.
